Ban on Evictions Extended Until 20 September 2020

August 24, 2020

Category: News

If there is anything that the last few months have taught us, it is that things can change very rapidly. Following the article 'What's changing from 24 August?' published on our website only last week, the Government has announced an extension of the moratorium on residential evictions until 20 September 2020.

If you read our article you may have expected that our Enforcement Agents would be resuming evictions from today. Although this is no longer the case, they are still able to resume enforcement visits at residential addresses from today.

Additionally, as explained in the article, the current ban on evictions does not apply to trespassers whom have never had a right of occupation. Throughout the challenging COVID-19/lockdown period, we have also retained our powers to enforce County Court Judgments (CCJs) against businesses, along with our ability to recover assets when debtors are unable to pay.

Sarah Roscoe, Managing Director at Andrew Wilson & Co, comments: "The announcement was made at the eleventh hour, on Friday 21 August, just three days before the current stay on evictions was due to come to an end. We are obviously very disappointed that landlords and creditors, many of whom have already suffered financially and for a long time due to non-paying tenants and borrowers, will now have to wait even longer to regain control of their property.

"When the current restrictions are lifted, we will have a backlog of evictions to work through, but once again I can reassure you that we are moving forward with a team of high-quality people who are committed to resolving cases as quickly as possible, whilst abiding by the new rules and regulations with regards to social distancing and notice periods."

If you have not yet read our 'What's changing from 24 August?' article, dated 18 August, it is still worth a read as many of the new regulations and procedures will still apply. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
